Re: 1972 Grover Rotomatics on Martins - What was the Gear Ratio?

I assume they stayed the same (12:1) from their introduction, until Grover outsourced to Asian manufacture. Offhand, I can't bring myself to be interested in gear ratios higher than 12:1. Hey -...

Thanks Frank. That's what I thought but wasn't completely sure. Best, MRT

I can't bring myself to be interested in gear ratios higher than 12:1.+1.IMHO, anything higher just creates a lot of wasted motion.I liken this inflation of tuner ratios to the selling of...

" Offhand, I can't bring myself to be interested in gear ratios higher than 12:1. " I like 18 : 1 on guitars, and I like about 1,000,000 : 1 on mandos.

Re: 1972 Grover Rotomatics on Martins - What was the Gear Ratio?

I just put 18:1 on the Martin HD28 and like it much better than 12:1 if you are trying to nail a certain cent like James Taylor's tuning 101 video. I use an automated screwdriver with a cup tip when...

12:1 is great if you like to change strings quickly without a peg winder.  For me, 18:1 makes for a far easier experince in getting a guitar in tune.  I'm kind of astinished that anyone would want...

Re: 1972 Grover Rotomatics on Martins - What was the Gear Ratio?

I'm kind of astonished that anyone would want 12:1 on their guitar if precise tuning is a goal. Some people have more ability than others. Personally, I have no problem tuning a guitar with 12:1...

"Some people have more ability than others" Yeah, but I find that those folks are usually out of tune. The rest of us use revolutionary new devices: electronic tuners.

Re: 1972 Grover Rotomatics on Martins - What was the Gear Ratio?

A higher ratio does not make tuning more "precise": by requiring more turns of the knob to achieve the same difference in pitch, it merely makes tuning (and string changing) less efficient and hence...

Re: 1972 Grover Rotomatics on Martins - What was the Gear Ratio?

I higher ratio by definition is more precise. Look at a dial caliper. You can get one with .01" per tick or with .001" per tick. They both close on the measured object to the exact same place, but you...

Re: 1972 Grover Rotomatics on Martins - What was the Gear Ratio?

Well, a dial caliper is an instrument for the measurement of fixed objects, not a tool for the adjustment of variable ones, so the analogy doesn't hold. The precision of a tuning adjustment depends on...

Re: 1972 Grover Rotomatics on Martins - What was the Gear Ratio?

The frequency you are after is "fixed" You want 440Hz, not 399.5, not 440.005. It takes precision to zoom in and affect small differences. Higher ratio gives you that. I can give many more examples...

Spare me the patronizing tone, Wielywillyg: first, don't presume to tell me how to think, and second, I'm unfamiliar with Snark clip-ons but use a Sonic Research strobe tuner of "extreme accuracy:...

Re: 1972 Grover Rotomatics on Martins - What was the Gear Ratio?

Just an FYI. I settled on these 1:21 precision tuners as they work best for me. The most precise tuning I have experienced to date, with such ease and minute increments. Love it. Also, they are a...

Re: 1972 Grover Rotomatics on Martins - What was the Gear Ratio?

There is a 33% difference in 12:1 versus 18:1 tuners. To get the exact same 'precision' with 12:1 tuners, all you have to do is turn the button 33% slower. There is a point where that is not...

I think different than most people. It is very seldom on any forum I post where a bunch of people chime in and say "hey, that guy knows what he is talking about". Most are like you not-so-megerman,...
